Neck lift

Loose, sagging skin, as well as excess fat around the neck, adds to the overall aged appearance of the facial area. As part of a neck lift, an incision is made under the chin to allow for removal of the excess fat and skin in that area and to smooth the cord-like structures of the underlying muscle in the neck.  Often done in conjunction with facial surgery, a neck lift helps to provide a continuous smooth contour between the face and the neck.

Liposuction for men's necks works well only for the simplest fat deposits in the younger neck.  A man's skin is thicker and less elastic than a woman's, and therefore doesn't retract as well when fat is removed.  Further, a man's neck muscles have frequently descended into the neck. Removal of the fat without repairing the muscles may leave "turkey gobbler" bands.  A submental neck lift addresses both problems, fat and muscles, for a clean jaw line and neck. This is not to say that on some men, liposuction alone is not effective.  Older men or men who have lost significant weight, however, will require a facelift.

A  Good Candidate:

The best candidate for a Neck Lift is a man whose face and neck have begun to sag, but whose skin still has some elasticity and whose bone structure is strong and well defined.  Most patients are in their forties to sixties, but neck lifts can be done successfully on people in their seventies or eighties as well.  The best candidates for a Neck Lift are men close to their ideal weight with good overall physical health, elastic skin tone, and one who has realistic expectations for the outcome.  The best candidates are those people who meet the following criteria:

  • They have firm, elastic skin
  • They are well informed regarding the surgical procedure
  • They have realistic expectations

Procedure Details / Expectations:

Neck lift plastic surgery is performed on an outpatient basis in our fully accredited surgery center in Gainesville, Florida.  The neck lift procedure may require an incision under the chin, behind the ears, or both.  Depending on your particular needs, fat may be removed, muscles in the neck may be tightened, and skin around the neck may be excised or tightened.  The excess skin is trimmed away, and then repositioned to create a smoother, firmer, more youthful looking neck.  Depending on the extent of the procedure, the surgery can take up to 2 hours

Recovery:

Initially after surgery you will be sleepy.  You will find that you are sore but not in pain, and over the next week or so the bruising resolves, swelling starts to resolve, and you notice your new neckline.  Your neck will feel tight over the first few days after surgery and you will go through a phase where your skin feels tight followed by a slow transition to normal feeling.  Patients usually eat a soft diet for the first day and then resume a normal diet.  By one month you should be looking very good and by three months you should be looking terrific.  Expect four to six weeks to return to full activity.

Positive changes in your neck appearance start to occur very soon after surgery and will continue to evolve for several months.  You will see a reduction of loose skin, hollowness, and deep wrinkles, creating a fresher and tighter facial appearance. Dr. Brill is particularly careful to create natural-looking results without an obviously "worked on" appearance.

Procedure FAQ’s:

What is Cervicoplasty?

Cervicoplasty is a technique employed to remove excess skin in the neck region.  When significant fat is removed, skin often sags.  In order for excess skin to be removed, Dr. Brill will make an incision beneath the chin, cut and lift excess skin and secure it in place with sutures. Recovery typically takes ten days and involves swelling and bruising around the incision.

What is Platysmaplasty?

Platysmaplasty is used to realign neck muscles into a more cosmetically appealing position. As we age the skin as well as the muscles underneath lose their elasticity and tension.  As a result excess skin and/or muscle will have a “turkey-gobbler” appearance to them.
