LIPOSUCTION

Men are no different, in that despite aggressive exercise and diet they still find themselves plagued by areas of unwanted and resistant fat.  This is most common about the waistline and flanks (love handles or spare tires as they are sometimes called).  This becomes very frustrating to patients who find themselves in great physical shape but are unable to get rid of these problem areas.

Liposuction body sculpting has become one of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures performed today.  Proven safety, minimal scarring and outstanding results have made it the preferred method for removing fat from the hips, thighs, buttocks and midriff, as well as areas of the face, neck and arms. Liposuction is not an alternative to weight reduction, but can be very effective in removing fat from areas that do not respond to diet and exercise programs.

It is important that Dr. Brill understands the needs of the male liposuction patient; their body contouring needs are different and they do not want to look feminized.  Their body contour should reflect that of a well-toned male and a thorough understanding how to contour the back and waistline to avoid this is important.  Men often want etching of the abdomen to accentuate the abdominal muscles and this requires a surgeon who understands the anatomy of the male underlying muscles skin thickness and elasticity.

A  Good Candidate:

The best candidates for liposuction are men close to their ideal weight with good overall physical health, elastic skin tone, one who has realistic expectations for the outcome and is going to be happy to lose some fat deposits.  Men and women both may be candidates for liposuction. The best candidates for liposuction are those people who meet the following criteria:

  • They are within 25 lbs. of their ideal weight
  • They have firm, elastic skin
  • They are not prone to weight fluctuations
  • They are well informed regarding the liposuction procedure
  • They have realistic expectations
  • They exercise regularly

Liposuction can enhance your appearance and boost your self-confidence, but will not change you dramatically.

Procedure Details / Expectations:

To begin the procedure, r. Brill makes an incision in the area to be treated and injects a wetting solution into the area to numb it and to minimize the chance for blood loss.  R. Brill then inserts a hollow tube called a cannula into the incision.  The cannula is moved back and forth under the skin through the fat to separate the fat from the other tissues of the body.  Once the targeted fat cells are separated, a small vacuum is used to suction the fat from the body.

Stitches are used to close the incision and gauze dressings and tape are applied over the surgical area.  In some cases, surgical drains are inserted to help drain fluids from the site of the incision.  You will be provided with instructions on how to care for the drains. A liposuction compression garment is placed over the surgery area to squeeze the body fluids disturbed during the liposuction procedure back toward deeper tissues to reduce swelling.

Recovery:

Even though the incisions look small, liposuction affects lots of tissue beneath your skin. Though hidden, the result is a large wound that your body needs to repair.  Because of this, the surgical area will be very sore, bruised, and swollen.  To promote proper circulation and reduce swelling and bruising, you will need to wear an elastic garment on the treated area to compress your new shape.  You can expect to be up and walking around shortly after liposuction surgery to minimize risks due to poor circulation.  It is important to have someone drive you home after your surgery and to stay with you for the first few days after surgery.

During the first 24 to 48 hours after your procedure, you may experience mild to moderate discomfort.  Pain medication will be prescribed to alleviate as much post-surgery pain as possible.  To help reduce the swelling and promote healing, it is important that you wear the special liposuction compression garment that was placed over the surgical area at all times for the first two weeks after your surgery and then 12 hours a day for the second two weeks. Your discomfort level will improve rapidly after the first few days.

During your recovery, do not apply ice packs or heating pads without calling the doctor for approval. It is also important not to soak in a bath, Jacuzzi, or swimming pool for at least seven days after your surgery in order to avoid infection.  If drains were inserted into the surgical area during your liposuction, they will be removed within a week of your surgery. You can shower the day after the drains are removed. If no drains were used, you can shower two to three days after your surgery.

Procedure FAQ’s:

How much fat is removed during liposuction?

Liposuction removes up to five liters (about 11 pounds) of unwanted fat, depending on the patient and the body area being treated.  Large-volume liposuction, involving more than five liters of fat, is more complex and Dr. Brill will explain in detail.

What is involved in recuperation from liposuction?

Do you perform liposuction in combination with other procedures?

Yes – Dr. Brill often uses liposuction in conjunction with Tummy Tucks and Body Lifts for best results. Liposuction is also very effective in refining certain facial and neck procedures.

Can liposuction give me a six-pack?

No - Liposuction does not tighten skin; it sculpts the body. A six-pack is muscle, and only exercise can create one.  However, liposuction can reveal better definition of the underlying musculature.

Will my fat come back, or is liposuction permanent?

Liposuction doesn't remove all fat cells.  If you gain a lot of weight, the treated areas will get larger, but the overall improvement in contour will remain.  It is important to commit to a regimen of healthy diet and exercise to maintain and maximize your results.

What results can I expect from liposuction?

The primary goal of liposuction is to improve the contour of the treated area, creating better body proportion. Very soon after surgery, you can expect to see a noticeable difference in the shape of your body.  Your incision line will fade in the months following surgery, although the scar will be permanent.  Unless you gain or lose a significant amount of weight, you can expect to retain your new shape for many years.

Notes: If needed

Liposuction is not designed as a treatment for obesity or weight reduction and people who fall into this category will need advice on diet and exercise before considering surgery.
