face lift
Facelift for men is an effective way to reverse the unwanted effects produced by age, stress, and sun exposure. Although the results achieved with male face lift surgery are similar to those enjoyed by women, there are some differences. Perhaps the key difference is the location of the incisions, because men tend to wear their hair shorter than women, hiding potential scars after a male face lift can be more challenging. This often allows for less flexibility in terms of where incisions can be made. Dr. Brill always places the incision as inconspicuously as possible, often along the natural crease where the ear meets the side of the face, around the earlobe, and into the lower scalp area under the hair.
Since everyone goes through the facial aging process at different times there is no “right time” to start thinking about a facelift. Both men and women who are concerned about improving the signs of facial aging are ideal candidates for the procedure. If you want to look and feel better, there’s no better time than now!
A Good Candidate:
Most facelift patients are in their 40s to 60s, but facelifts can be performed on older patients as well. An important factor in the outcome of a facelift is the amount of elasticity in the skin. The ideal Face Lift candidate is a person whose face and neck are starting to sag, but whose skin still has a fair amount of elasticity. If you have one or more of the following, you may be a good candidate for a facelift procedure:
Procedure Details / Expectations:
Good communication between you and Dr. Brill is essential when planning your Face Lift. Dr. Brill will also evaluate your health, conduct a physical exam, take preoperative photographs, and explain which surgical techniques are most appropriate for you. Dr. Brill will discuss your surgical procedure, the type of anesthesia used, where the surgery will be performed, and the possible risks and side effects of the procedure. Afterwards, you will visit with our office manager Joy and she will confirm the procedure you desire, show you photos of patient’s results, discuss the costs involved and schedule your surgery.
Depending on your skin type and the extent of your surgery, a facelift procedure can take up to three hours. A general anesthetic will be used. There are a number of safe and effective facelift techniques that can be used; Dr. Brill starts with incisions made either at the hairline, at the ear, along the earlobe, or at the chin. The excess skin is removed, along with any unnecessary fat and muscle in the area. The remaining skin is positioned where appropriate and then re-attached; leaving a minimal scar that will likely be hidden from view.
Recovery:
Facelift patients can expect several weeks of recovery following the surgery. Swelling and bruising are the most common side effects, and may last for two or three weeks. Post-operative pain is moderate but can be managed successfully with medication. Some facelift patients may experience feelings of numbness or tightness across the face or neck for weeks. Risks / Complications:
Although facelift is performed in a safe environment with our experienced plastic surgeon, there is a certain level of risk associated with the procedure. Risks of facelift may include nerve damage, reaction to anesthesia, discoloration of the skin, blood or fluid retention underneath the skin, and numbness or tingling sensation around the incisions.
The best way of minimizing the risk of complications from facelift surgery is to strictly adhere to Dr. Brill's advice and recommendations before and after the procedure. It should also be noted that facelift is considered one of the safest cosmetic surgery options. Dr. Brill will discuss all risks and benefits of a Face Lift with you at your initial consultation.
Procedure FAQ’s:
I only want my neck improved. Is this possible without a facelift?
Yes - In some patients the neck can be tightened without a full facelift. This procedure, a Neck Lift, usually involves making just the incision below the chin, and tightening the underlying muscle layer in the middle. Liposuction of the neck may also be used.
My eyes look tired also. What can be done for them?
A facelift does not improve the appearance of the eyes, but this can be easily accomplished with a procedure called a Blepharoplasty. This procedure involves removing excess tissue of the eyelids to create a younger and refreshed look. You may also want to consider a Brow lift, to raise the eyebrows to a more youthful position.
I also would like to improve the deep crease from my nose to the corner of my mouth. Will a facelift help this?
This crease is called the nasolabial fold, and it is usually not improved significantly by a facelift. The nasolabial fold is best treated by injections of fillers under it, or by performing a mid-Face Lift which elevates the soft tissue of the cheek.
Where does the surgery take place?
Your procedure is performed on an outpatient basis at the Surgery Center of North Florida, our fully accredited surgical center. After a short recovery you will be able to go home the same day.
How much pain will I have after surgery?
Facelifts do not generate excessive pain during recovery. You will mainly experience a sensation of tightness in your skin, which comes from swelling. Discomfort is well controlled with medications, which we will prescribe.
Will I have scars?
The scars of a facelift are well hidden, and are usually only noticeable by the patient.
How much time off should I take from work and exercising?
You should plan to take one to two weeks off of work, so swelling and bruising can resolve. Exercise should be avoided for about three weeks after surgery.
Do patients ever need another facelift?
Your face will always look younger and more refreshed after surgery, but it will continue to age. After a complete facelift, some patients may want a revision surgery, usually ten or more years later.
A facelift can eliminate many signs of aging, giving you a refreshed, revitalized and healthy new look. Individuals can learn more about Face Lift procedures or other available procedures for men when they schedule a consultation with Roger T. Brill, M.D by contacting our
