Eyelid Lift
Because they are the natural focal point of your face, your eyes are considered the best representation of your inner thoughts, moods, and even your personality. The eyes are the key into the soul. Research has shown that the eyes are the most important factor determining facial age and beauty.
Dr. Roger Brill is an expert in Eyelid Lift, also called Blepharoplasty or eyelid lift. He considers each patients goals, aging process and anatomy to treat them appropriately. Dr. Brill has been performing cosmetic and reconstructive eyelid surgery for over 20 years, and has performed thousands of eyelid surgeries ranging from complex reconstructions to minimal incision cosmetic procedures. His experience with a large variety of problems and concerns will help you achieve your goal of eyelid/facial rejuvenation
As you age, sagging upper eyelids and baggy lower lids can make you appear tired, sad, and older than your true age. For some people, excess skin can even impair vision. An Eyelid Lift is a surgical procedure designed to lift droopy eyelids and remove excess skin around the eyes, resulting in eyes that look fresh, well-rested, and alert.
Consultation:
You will begin the process with a consultation with Dr. Brill. He will take a full medical history and you will be asked many questions to ensure you are a good candidate for the procedure. Medical history, family history, allergies and surgery risks are a few examples of topics that will be discussed during consultation.
A Good Candidate:
The best candidates for eyelid surgery are men or women who are physically healthy and seek to correct puffiness or drooping of the eyes. Additional possible reasons are:
If you have excessive, sagging or wrinkled upper or lower eyelid skin.
If you have excess upper eyelid skin that interferes with vision.
If you have lost your natural upper eyelid crease.
If you have puffy pouches of fat in the upper or lower lids that create a tired or aged
appearance.
Procedure Details / Expectations:
Dr. Brill will examine your eyes in a consultation prior to your surgery to determine the extent of surgery needed and the best technique to use. Upper eyelids are treated through an incision that is made in the natural crease above the eye. Dr. Brill removes the excess skin and fatty tissue before closing the incision. Since the incision is located inconspicuously, the scar is very hard to detect once healed.
If you need your lower eyelids corrected, Dr. Brill will make an incision just below the lower eyelashes before removing excess tissue. Special adjustments may also be made at this point. For example, the fat beneath the eye can be redistributed to eliminate puffiness, bulges, or to improve the semicircular hollowing seen beneath the eye; in some patients, the underlying muscle will be tightened.
Dr. Brill may decide that the best approach for removing fat from the lower eyelid is with a transconjunctival blepharoplasty. In this procedure, an incision is placed inside the lower eyelid. This technique requires no external incisions, but it cannot be used to remove excess skin. Patients may elect to have their eyelid surgery combined with a Face Lift or Brow Lift to maximize the rejuvenating effect.
Your intended result: A more youthful and rested appearance of the eyes. You may also experience widening of visual fields if excessive upper lid skin has partially blocked vision.
All sutures are usually removed within 4-6 days. Initial mild discomfort is easily controlled with oral medication that you will be prescribed prior to your surgery. You will experience bruising and sensitivity to light last at least a week or two. Swelling progressively disappears in 1-2 weeks. Eye makeup can be used after sutures are removed. Contact lenses can be worn when comfortable -- usually within 7-10 days.
Other Options:
Additional procedures that would enhance the result are: Forehead Lift, Face Lift, Chemical Peel or Laser Skin Resurfacing.
Cost / Insurance:
This procedure is considered cosmetic and therefore not covered by insurance.

Risks / Complications:
Risks of injury to the eye, infection or bleeding which could impair vision are extremely small, but do exist and must be considered.
Other risks common to all surgical procedures such as bleeding, infection and scar tissue formation occur in a very small percentage of cases. We will give you more detailed information about these and other rare risks in our written information, and encourage you to discuss any which concern you during your consultation.
If deformities exist in areas of the face besides the eyelids, additional procedures may be necessary in those areas for optimal facial appearance.
The specific risks and the suitability of this procedure for a given individual can be determined only at the time of consultation. All surgical procedures have some degree of risk. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome occur occasionally. Major complications are unusual.
*NOTE*
You are also at increased risk for complications from a procedure if you have diabetes, poor circulation, heart, lung or liver disease, smoke, have a family history of blood clots, take certain medications, etc. You will want to discuss your medical history thoroughly with Dr. Brill before you choose to undergo surgery.
There are limits to the amount of tissue which can or should be removed from the eyelid. Excessive removal of fat can produce a hollow, unnatural appearance. Excessive removal of skin can cause deformities or prevent proper eye closure. The key to the best result is precise planning of the procedure based on careful measurements of your eyelids. Eyelid surgery cannot remove every wrinkle from the eyelid area. Differences which exist in the eyelids on both sides may be improved after surgery, but slight differences will always be present.
